BenarNews is an online news service affiliated with Radio Free Asia (RFA) that reports in Bengali, Thai, Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia and English, on pressing topics such as human rights, freedom of expression, conflict, climate change, politics and geopolitics.  As a Video Editor, you’ll create compelling factual video content for our website and social media platforms.

This position is a contractor position, and open to candidates who are based in one of BenarNews’ covered country: Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia. The role is expected to work 40 hours/week during normal business hours in Asia, but occasionally in late evening/on the weekends in order to collaborate with Washington D.C colleagues. This is a contract position that expires on September 15, 2025.  

• Collaborate with video journalists based in BenarNews' coverage areas to produce engaging content based on the footage they send in.
• Conduct research, verify facts, and incorporate credible sources into scripts.
• Distill complex topics into clear, impactful narratives suitable for video formats.
• Write compelling video scripts that are accompanied by engaging social media descriptions designed for SEO.
• Edit videos with strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly in Adobe Premiere and After Effects. Use infographics, music, and sound effects to create engaging content.
• Adapt videos into other languages and tailor videos for maximum engagement on different social media platforms.
• Ensuring that the videos adhere to BenarNews style and are aligned with our editorial vision and standards.
• Ensure content is accurate and error-free.
• The ability (or willingness) to voiceover or present in front of a camera is a plus.

Education

Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field from an accredited school or university or equivalent transferable skills showing the ability to gather, produce, write, and present news and information clearly and objectively.

Experience

Minimum 2 years experience working in a newsroom, with video editing experience.

Skills/Abilities

• Strong journalism background with demonstrated experience in storytelling, news writing, or content creation.

• Sound news judgment and discretion in evaluating news stories.

• Knowledge and understanding of current political, economic, and social conditions in the countries that BenarNews covers.

• Demonstrated ability to edit video using Adobe Premiere Pro and create motion graphics with After Effects by providing examples of published videos.

• Deep understanding of social media trends, algorithms, and audience engagement strategies.

• Experience in creating platform-optimized content that drives views, shares, and interactions on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.

• Initiative, creative, detail-oriented problem solver.

• Able to work independently as well as part of a team.

• Required language skills: Spoken and written fluency in English.

• Good to have: Fluent in Bengali, Thai, Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia or Tagalog.
