Overview

RFA is currently seeking a highly driven and competent candidate to lead the Dharamsala Bureau as Bureau Chief for RFA’s Tiibetan Service. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to lead by example and deliver high-quality journalism to meet our ever-evolving audience needs. S/he will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the Dharamsala office, executing editorial strategy and spearheading content production across formats, and be in constant communication with RFA Tibetan Service Director, who is based in Washington D.C. to fulfill the mission of delivering unbiased, credible and timely Tibet-related news and information. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee all aspects of RFA’s Dharamsala office under the supervision of the RFA Tibetan Service Director, ensuring a smooth and efficient operation tailored to the RFA Tibetan language news service.
  • Keeps Washington DC headquarters abreast of all major news developments and issues, trouble-shoots problems as they arise, and plans for future events.
  • Contributes content and editorial production for RFA Tibetan Service programming across formats and platforms
  • Supervises all RFA Tibetan Service staff in the Dharamsala office in close coordination with the RFA Tibetan Service Director, and maintains the highest journalistic standards in all RFA Tibetan Service reports for broadcast and online distribution. 
  • Maintains communications with RFA Tibetan Service personnel in Washington DC and with RFA stringers and consultants in India, for efficient programming and resource management.
  • Provides direction to the Dharamsala office manager, editor, and broadcasting staff to ensure that all office, editorial and administrative functions are executed in a professionally and timely
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the RFA Tibetan Service Director and RFA’s senior management. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, International Relations, Politics or related disciplines. Advanced degree is favored.
  • A minimum of 10 years in journalism, with at least 5 years in a managerial role. Candidates with prior experience in broadcasting and risk management will be given preference.
  • Native fluency in the Tibetan language. Proficient English and Hindi communication skills. Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is a plus.
  • Possess robust editorial acumen and deep understanding of Sino-Tibetan issues, the socio-political landscape inside Tibet and in the exile diaspora, and ability to foster trust and relationship management with sources and stakeholders
  • Strong managerial experience, possesses the knowledge and credentials to lead the team through complex issues and crises; grasps the implications of policy and procedural changes, and makes sound recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster positive relations with the local Tibetan community and maintain favorable ties with the relevent officials and stakeholders.
