Overview

RFA multimedia team is seeking a forward-thinking and experienced Photo Editor to join our Creative Team on a part-time basis, working 25 hours a week. This role emphasizes news judgment and involves collaborating closely with the Creative Director, Visual Project Manager, and editorial teams to maintain the highest visual and editorial news standards for RFA services. 

 

The photo editor finds imagery to accompany 8-15 stories each day and writes appropriate captions for each image. The photo editor also finds images for carousels to run on the website and social media and writes captions for these as well. This is a hybrid position working in-office 3 days a week, and 2 days remotely, and  five hours a day, Monday through Friday, between 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively source and verify compelling images from wire services, social media, government and organization websites, and RFA archives to enhance stories across all RFA services.
  • Collaborating with RFA English and RFA language services to select and edit photos for daily and longer term RFA stories, ensuring accuracy and relevance.
  • Crop, tone, and adjust images as necessary to optimize visual impact.
  • Write and rewrite accurate and engaging photo captions, ensuring alignment with the content.
  • Organize images and captions in appropriate collaborative folders and maintain a comprehensive visual archive.
  • Contact image and video copyright owners, especially with content sourced from social media, and obtain necessary permissions for publication.
  • Curate captivating photo essays to enhance storytelling on our platforms.
  • Actively contribute ideas for photos, videos, and stories, showcasing innovative thinking.
  • Collaborate with team members to continually improve RFA's photo and visual report.
  • Stay updated on evolving technologies and industry trends to enhance our visual storytelling capabilities.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by the Creative Director and Visual Project Manager.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of experience in photo editing at a reputable news organization is mandatory.
  • Experience in East Asia or Southeast Asian current affairs, and associate degree in photojournalism  is desired.
  • Fluency in English is required and proficiency in at least one of RFA's service languages is preferred.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating a range of photo editing skills, news judgment, and innovative visual storytelling approaches.
  • Exceptional attention to detail on published digital news products, ensuring accuracy and relevance of visual content.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team and thrive in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to evolving technologies and industry best practices.
  • Proven experience in managing and organizing digital assets, contributing to the development of digital asset management systems is a plus.
