Overview

Radio Free Asia is seeking an experienced, innovative leader with digital/broadcastjournalism background and integrity to lead its East Asian services. The Managing Editor for East Asia must have a deep commitment to unbiased, high-quality journalism and astute skills in managing personnel in a complex, multicultural organization. Knowledge and understanding of Asia, particularly East Asia, is required. Leading by example, this individual will motivate and inspire journalists to gather news under extremely challenging circumstances. Creativity in reaching RFA’s audience inside a severely restricted news environment in Asia is a must.  This position will be based in RFA’s Washington, DC, headquarters.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising the daily operations of the Mandarin, Tibetan, Korean, Uyghur and Cantonese language services to ensure timely, relevant multimedia programming for broadcast, online, and social media.
  • Providing strong editorial leadership and managerial guidance to each of RFA's five East Asia Service Directors.
  • Lead daily editorial meetings of service directors, and coordinate with other editorial departments at RFA to deliver high-quality content.
  • Monitoring and maintaining quality control for all news programming produced by staff, as well as by contractors and stringers; and providing regular written evaluations of the same.
  • Keeping current on political, cultural, economic, and social developments in the region to inform programming decisions as well as staying current with the demands of reaching RFA audiences in a restricted media environment.
  • Developing long-term programming plans in coordination with the East Asia Service Directors to strengthen and expand the reach of RFA’s news programming.
  • Overseeing the staff hiring process of all services to achieve the strategic goal with required skill sets. 
  • Overseeing all administrative tasks of the East Asian language services, including the establishment, expansion and renovation of overseas bureaus. To maintain close coordination with other RFA departments, including Technical Operations, Finance, Human Resources, Audience Research/Training/Program Evaluation, Legal, and Communications.
  • Providing input as a member of Editorial’s senior leadership into guiding the overall direction of the department and developing strategies to accomplish RFA's mission as an independent, surrogate news source for Asia.
  • Representing the President of RFA and the Executive Editor in contacts with other journalistic entities in the international broadcasting and media field when required. 
  • Adhere to and uphold the RFA News Standards and Best Practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or other related field from an accredited college or university; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years experience in journalism, including as a reporter and/or editor in the East Asia coverage area and with extensive experience in broadcast and video.
  • Minimum eight years experience in staff/editorial management.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills and knowledge, and experience in multimedia journalism are strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of how to reach audiences in countries and regions covered by RFA’s East Asia division.
  • Deep understanding of current political, economic, and social conditions in East Asia.
  • Strong editing skills and demonstrated ability to exercise unbiased, timely, and principled news analysis and judgment.
  • Demonstrated managerial and problem-solving skills, as well as outstanding leadership quality that inspires the teams.
  • Proven ability to work in an international workplace; excellent cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Working proficiency in Mandarin language is highly preferred.
