Overview

BenarNews is seeking a skilled and Asia-focused journalism professional to rewrite, edit, and add value to stories produced by its six component news services, for publication on its English-language website and major social media platforms. This full-time position will be based in Benar’s Washington, DC office. 

Responsibilities

  • Edits/rewrites English content prior at a consistently high standard for clarity, accuracy, grammar, and flow, under sometimes intense time pressure 
  • Transforms stories submitted by journalists for whom English is a second or third language, crafting them for a wider audience with the appropriate context and level of detail 
  • Publishes content on the BenarNews website and associated social media platforms in a timely manner
  • Uses sound editorial judgment in helping select stories that enable BenarNews to stand out in crowded media markets; helps develop coverage plans in support of the BenarNews mission
  • Covers news events and other noteworthy events as assigned; pitches stories when time permits
  • Researches and writes original reports that are accurate, concise, clear, organized, and descriptive
  • Uses sound visual skills and ethics in selecting photographs and supporting visual storytelling
  • Displays and pursues a deepening understanding of current events across the BenarNews coverage region

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years journalism experience, either in professional newsroom or as freelancer; digital journalism experience is strongly preferred 
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in the field of journalism, translation, literature, or other related subjects
  • Mastery of written English with ability to convert rough translations to polished English while maintaining accuracy and meaning of original work
  • Proficiency in one of BenarNews coverage languages is strongly advantageous
  • Experience with publishing content online and to social media
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work effectively with diverse cultures and personalities
  • Excellent attention to detail with ability to reliably produce grammatically correct and typo-free work
  • Proven record of integrity and ethical decision-making in a journalism setting
